Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR)
HCMR participates in SUSINCHAIN project through its Aquaculture Department of the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture. The Aquaculture Department aims to carry out basic and applied research on the development of technology transfer, on developing know-how and provision, as well as on providing specialized services in the fisheries management field.
Research Orientation
The objective of the Department of Aquaculture is to research the interaction between aquacultures and the environment, to control and reinforce the physical productivity of the marine systems. The basic research focuses on the definition, the understanding and the control of the biological mechanisms involved in the rearing process of marine organisms either already reared or with rearing potential (i.e., physiology, pathology, ethnology, developmental biology, immunology, metabolism, etc). For applied research, most of the work is aiming to the development and improvement of hatchery techniques, but also of appropriate tools for the correct feeding and general husbandry of reared populations with automated systems. Additionally, the introduction of new species requires the development of infrastructures and methodologies adapted to the environment and the specific requirements of fishes (such as submersible cages and conditions of autonomous operation).
