SUSINCHAIN Work Package leaders in Porto, Portugal
Dear Readers and friends of SUStainable INsect CHAIN (SUSINCHAIN),
Greeting text from the project coordinator
This 9th issue of the SUSINCHAIN newsletter focuses on the project review meeting and the Work Package leaders meeting held on 25 and 26 January 2023 at the facilities of SPI in Porto, Portugal. The consortium was happy to receive positive feedback and suggestions for improvements from the external reviewers and the Project Officer. During the Work package leaders meeting the focus was mainly on the development of the draft roadmap. Information on the stakeholders workshop to be held on May 31st 2023 is provided and I kindly ask you to register for this very interesting workshop related to best practices and the draft roadmap to support the scaling of insect protein production in Europe, based on the outcomes of the project. Also activities of the Horizon4Proteins cluster are highlighted including a number of Webinars which will be organised soon. As the project will conclude in September 2023 we currently have started the organisation of the final Symposium which will be held on September 27, 2023 in Wageningen, The Netherlands. More details will follow soon and you are invited to already block your calendar for this Symposium highlighting the main outcomes of the project.
Teun Veldkamp, Wageningen Livestock Research, coordinator of SUSINCHAIN.

SUSINCHAIN Review Meeting and Work Package leaders meeting in Porto, Portugal, between 25-26 January 2023
SUSINCHAIN consortium at the review meeting in Porto, Portugal
The SUSINCHAIN H2020 project held two meetings on 25 and 26 January, 2023. The project review meeting and the Work-package leaders meeting were organized to evaluate the progress of the project, outline key challenges and plan the final stage of the project implementation.
The event was attended by the project team and reviewers from the European Commission. Throughout the day, the project team presented the current state of the project and results from each work package, highlighting the milestones achieved so far and discussed the challenges faced during the period. The two events took place in a hybrid format. The Work-package leaders met in person at the facilities of the project partner Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (SPI) in Porto (Portugal) and the rest of the consortium as well as the Project Officer (PO) and two external reviewers joined remotely via Teams.
The PO and reviewers provided feedback on the project's progress, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses and suggested some areas for improvement. Overall, the review meeting was a success, with the project team receiving positive feedback on their work so far. The project is on track to meet its objectives, and the team is committed to delivering innovative solutions that can benefit the entire supply chain industry. On the second day, the Work package leaders meeting was focused on roadmap development that will be presented and discussed at the SUSINCHAIN online workshop to be held on 31st May 2023.

SUSINCHAIN Stakeholder online workshop | 31 May 2023 | 9.30 to 14.30 CEST
SUSINCHAIN stakeholder online workshop will take place on Wednesday, 31 May 2023. The aim of the workshop is to present best practices for insect production, processing and use, as well as to discuss a draft roadmap to support the scaling of insect production in Europe, elaborated on basis of the results of the SUSINCHAIN project. The SUSINCHAIN project (funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme) aims to test, pilot and demonstrate recently developed technologies, products and processes, to promote sustainable insect chains based on Black Soldier Fly, Housefly, Mealworm and Crickets for feed and/or food production. One of the actions in this context is to organise a series of relevant workshops (for an overview of past workshops and events, see at the project website).
The discussion at this workshop will be led by Dr Teun Veldkamp (Coordinator), Dr Frank Alleweldt (Lead WP1 and roadmap) and the other Work Package Leaders of SUSINCHAIN. The workshop will take place online and last from 9.30h to 14.30h CEST (latest to 15.00h CEST), with the first part of the workshop being devoted to best practices and the second part on working groups focusing on specific areas of action highlighted in the draft roadmap, with a final plenary discussion. There will be a lunch break, likely between 12.00h and 12.30h CEST.
We would very much appreciate your involvement in this SUSINCHAIN workshop. We believe that your participation as industry representative, researcher, policy maker or other relevant organisation will add important contributions to the development of the insect sector in Europe. A final agenda for the workshop and all further details, including our online platform will be sent to you well before the workshop.

Horizon4protein joint webinar series
|
Horizon4Proteins is a cluster of 4 EU funded projects, who are developing alternative protein foods and feed to respond to this increasing demand. Sharing the same goal, the EU H2020 projects NextGenProteins, ProFuture, smart protein and SUSINCHAIN launched Horizon4Proteins, a Webinar series to work together in key aspects such as: Consumer acceptance of alternative proteins, Safety and Regulatory challenges, Food applications, and Sustainability.
The Cluster seeks to demonstrate the suitability and economic viability of next-generation proteins as part of food and feed value chains by developing high quality, safe, nutritious, sustainable food ingredients, such as microalgae, single cells, insects, and protein crops and developing novel technologies and production processes to meet the criteria of EU regulatory framework and safety constraints. These results will support the EU’s objective to set a path to transition towards a more sustainable and resilient food system.
Also check the Horizon4Proteins factsheet and the video.
